In the northern part of Kenya lies the Turkana desert.

Here you'll find one of the largest refugee camps in the world: Kakuma Refugee Camp. Hosting more than 300,000 people, over half of whom are minors, the camp faces constant pressure on its resources and infrastructure. In response, a number of Refugee Led Organisations (RLOs) have emerged from within the community itself, becoming a lifeline for the people who live there. Run by refugees, for refugees, these organisations understand the day-to-day struggles of camp life firsthand, and step in where external aid and formal institutions often fall short, providing education, healthcare, protection, and — increasingly — access to sustainable energy. Their work doesn't just improve living conditions; it restores a sense of agency and dignity to a community that is too often defined only by its displacement.
